Jakarta

I’ve been wanting to post some pics of the city of Jakarta – but like so many of my pics, they don’t do justice to what we actually see.  But something is better than nothing so I have to at least try and capture the craziness that is Jakarta!

There is high-rise construction going on everywhere to add to the massive number of skyscrapers already in place.  Where they find the land to keep building is a mystery but they do.  So as the streets and roads are blocked or closed off and lanes narrow from 3 or 4 to 1 because of the construction, the traffic keeps getting worse and has for years.  They are building a mass transit system through the city (which adds to the construction mess), but they’ve been doing that for a couple decades now without a lot of progress.  A mess….but it’s our mess!

I’ll edit this post as I get more pics of downtown, etc, because i find this city so fascinating.

And it goes on and on and on…and  I’ve barely scratched the surface!

One of the other fascinating things that I love about Jakarta is the beautiful landscaping of the common areas around the city and along the main city streets.  I have been to a lot of the cities in the US and you will NOT see landscaping as consistent as it is here.  Flowers growing, grass cut, shrubs trimmed, weeds pulled.  Very nice..

One of the other crazy things about Jakarta are the millions of motorcycles in the city and the craziness with them.  I hear yesterday the population of greater Jakarta is 16 million.

Yes there is a family of 4 on this bike…

Just 3 people PLUS their birdcage

A bike is just a delivery vehicle

Taking his bird for a ride…

Ran a couple errands yesterday and went to Pacific Place Mall, one of the nicer malls here.  (The Ritz Carlton Hotel is part of the development.)  A unique thing about Jakarta, is even though everyone is Muslim, they (and the malls) LOVE Christmas decorations.  I won’t bore you with standard mall decorations – you’ve seen them – but the one at Pacific Place was particularly unique.  I mean, nothing screams Christmas like Star Wars, right?  So here’s a 6 story Star Wars “tree” with the Death Star as the tree topper.

Yes, I know it’s Christmas, but no, we are not going in there.
